Pets Need Love and Affection.
This website was inspired by Angela P Smales a pet lover since birth. Angela was born in Santos, Brazil, South America.
She lived there for most of her childhood and teenage years.
In 1985 she moved completely, to live in South Shields, England, UK.
Angela is very aware of the fauna of Brazil, especially in the Amazon region and as a keen animal lover, she has not only kept various domesticated house pets, but has also rescued wild animals, either off the streets, or she has purchased wild animals, mainly birds, from “pet shops”, where they had been housed in dirty, small, and inadequate cages, to care for them until they regained their health and often their plumage! Later, she would release them into big aviaries at the local Santos animal wildlife sanctuaries.
Whilst living in Brazil, Angela wrote a very interesting compendium of all the pets she had cared for, and the good and sad times shared with them until they eventually went to be with the "Spirit in the sky". This compendium is very humorous in parts and yet so poignant at the same time, it is currently being converted into an ebook, which shall be available soon.
In February 1993, Angela’s husband David, rescued a baby hedgehog from the attentions of a "Jack Russell" dog. As the baby hedgehog was found hiding in a bed of nettles and had been injured, David went in to the rescue, receiving several stings from the nettles, hence the name Sting was given to the little hedgehog. David put it in a cardboard box and took it home to Angela.
In order to properly care for Sting, Angela contacted
St Tiggywinkles’ Animal Wildlife Hospital for advice and information.
Sting used to love sitting on Angela’s knee and being stroked!. He lived in a 4 foot fish tank (without the water). Sting lived with Angela for a few months over the winter, until he was strong and old enough to be released at a hedgehog sanctuary in Washington, County Durham, where he lived a good life and died peacefully at the age of 3. He became front page news in the South Shields Gazette, as Angela took him to a community centre during National Pet Week, to instruct the general public on how to feed wild hedgehogs i.e. by feeding them dog or cat food, and giving them water, as opposed to bread and milk which upsets their delicate stomachs.
In July 1993, Angela was “aired” on the television "Big Breakfast" show, Channel 4, in the slot titled “Me and My Pet” this footage was filmed with her and her 2 foot Amazon Red Tailed Catfish called “Chocky II”, it was in a 6 foot x 3 foot tropical fish tank (with water) at her home. Shortly after this screening, due to his size, Chocky II was re-housed to an aquarium in Cheshire, where he had the freedom of a large indoor pool and other “tank mates” for company, which was open to the public, he is now over 3 feet in length! By appearing on TV, this news also put him in the local South Shields Gazette under the heading “Chocky II Moves to Deeper Waters”. At the time Angela acquired Chocky II, she became a member of the "Red Tail Catfish Club", which gave her help and advice on how to look after such a large fish, even though at that time Chocky II was only one and a half inches long!
In October 2003 Angela took Qwackers, under her wing. A one week old Aylesbury duckling which was rescued from going onto the dinner plate. Angela’s pet Rottweiler, Tessie took a strong liking to Qwackers, she was very protective towards him, and helped to hand rear him. Qwackers’ short stay was spent mainly in the bathtub, and following Angela around the house or in the back yard, he didn’t like to be by himself and would protest loudly by giving short loud beeps! He also accompanied (by way of a shoulder bag), Angela and her two dogs while out walking, otherwise he would once again commence his short loud non stop piercing beeps, if left at home alone!!
Tessie and Qwackers
When Qwackers was 10 weeks old, Angela took him to Bede World’s Farm in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear, where he soon settled down, and now has a little girlfriend. Apparently both are doing well and are very popular with the public visitors.
Angela strongly opposes animal cruelty and supports various animal charities, some of which are:
-
PAL
-
Dog’s Trust
-
The Parrot Society
-
WSPA
-
Naturewatch
-
PDSA
-
RSPCA
-

-

Angela is interested in finding volunteers to join her local groups. She has sponsored two puppies, called Varley and Rufus, through Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, and has also adopted Doris, a Peking duck from Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norwich. Angela yearly fundraises for her local animal charity St Francis Animal Rescue in South Shields.
Angela has taken a course in canine psychology and has read numerous books on animals and on pet behaviour. In the past she has kept dogs, cats, garden snails, birds (including parrots), terrapins, tortoises, hedgehogs, cat litter trained house rabbits, chinchillas, gerbils, hamsters, rats, tropical and cold water fish.
Her brother-in-law breeds Siberian Huskies, which are Kennel Club show dogs, one of her sister-in-laws is a judge at Crufts, while her other sister-in-law has a passion for horses.
Tessie, her beloved Rottweiler goes to obedience classes every week, and has been trained to do her “business” on command. This came in very handy as Tessie had to go to the vet once, and a urine sample was required!
Since November 2003, Angela has been running a Pet Service through D & A Enterprises in the South Shields area of South Tyneside. The services offered are combined dog walking with training, and home boarding small pets as well as any one dog at any one time, as she keeps pets herself.
